Highlighted by NPR, our Host Home Program matches volunteer hosts in Los Angeles with SPY youth for short-term stays of 3-6 months. During their stays, youth can take advantage of our Access Center resources including our Housing Case Management Program, Education and Employment Program, and Counseling. Desired hosts are welcoming, non-judgmental individuals, couples, or families with a spare room or converted private space to offer, and are committed to helping youth experiencing homelessness lead safe, stable, and self-directed lives.
Seabrook–Wilson House
For many years it was open to the public as a historical museum, but just a couple of years ago it was closed to the public. Family conflict is one of the greatest factors involved in housing instability among youth. Through our youth and family reconnection program, Connect LA, Transition Age Youth (TAY) are supported with building and strengthening positive and healthy relationships with biological or non-biological family. The moniker of "the most haunted house in America" became, for a time, inseparable from the property. When the building was closed off to the public, the ghost-chasers believed it was more proof of nether-worldly events and a cover-up afoot.
Inside the Urgent Effort to Preserve Black Newspapers
"We (the county, when it took over the home) could not accept artifacts of which we knew nothing," she said. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 29, 1974, and around that time was when the tales started being told. The artifacts from inside the building, which Hunton described as "a real mixture, a real hodgepodge of stuff" have been removed.

In retrospect, Strong understands the pressures that must have been upon Neidlinger to punch up the profile of the house. "(Neidlinger) unwittingly got very involved with (the excitement of the situation) and took it upon herself to weave these stories," she said. While some might look down upon Neidlinger’s colorful commentary today, there is a belief that without it, the Seabrook-Wilson house might not have been allowed to remain. "Its first section on the west end was a one-and-a-half story cabin typical of a first-settlement dwelling in the early 17th century," said Hunton, "indicative of a pioneer, frontier environment." Over the years, mysteries and legends have been attributed to the property, including details that either cannot be firmly established or have been debunked outright.

It’s recently been reported by industry insider, Daniel Richtman, that Universal is rumored to be making Spy House. Jonathan Levine, whose writing credits include The Wackness, Warm Bodies, The Night Before and the TV series Nine Perfect Strangers, has penned the screenplay for the spy mystery. It is not yet revealed what the tone of the film will predominantly be, but with Levine, Goldberg and Rogen all involved creatively, it can be deduced that there could be an emphasis on comedy. But other renovation/preservation aspects of the building, according to its history, had to be done ad hoc in its past. Hunton explained that changes to the architecture in more recent times did not reflect with what the Seabrook family would have lived.

The origins of the “Spy House” moniker come from the legend that Seabrook would get the Redcoat soldiers liquored up enough to spill military secrets and then pass his overheard intelligence on to the Colonial forces. Historians are dubious about the validity of this tall tale, though most will admit certain aspects of it are at least partially factual. The building actually would become a tavern, but not until around 1910, more than a century after the legend states. It would be employed as an inn right up until the 1970s, operating under various names such as The Bayside Manor and the Lighthouse Inn. I went down to visit the house and its grounds this past September before going on an annual fluke fishing trip. In one photo I too of a window, it looks like something is staring back out at me.

In October, 1993, Neidlinger was locked out of the museum after a dispute with the Spy House Museum Corp.
It was originally organized as a gathering between journalists covering the White House and President Warren G. Harding. These days, the event serves as an opportunity for the President of the United States and other political figures to interact with the press in a more relaxed setting. There’s usually a monologue by a comedian (in 2023, it was Roy Wood Jr. of The Daily Show fame) and an often self-deprecating speech from the president. The federal agencies provided the financial institutions ‘thresholds’ for which an SAR should be raise, according to Peter Sullivan, the FBI’s former financial sector liaison.
‘In some cases, I believe financial institutions suggested to this group search terms they had used that had been helpful in identifying potential perpetrators of January 6,’ she testified about a group of financial institutions working with FinCen and the FBI. "This is a story for everyone who’s ever wanted to fit in," Harriet says in a voiceover during the clip. L’Enfant Plaza Food Court is a two-minute walk from SPY (entrance is directly behind the Museum) and is a perfect place for grabbing coffee or a quick bite. Since our founding, Safe Place for Youth has focused on providing a safe space for at-risk and unhoused youth to receive critical resources and a connection to community. Our “hub of hope” Access Center in Venice offers day services to nearly 1,000 youth annually, including on-site housing assessment and connection to available housing programs. Yet, at the end of each day, a majority of the young people we serve have to go back out onto the streets to sleep at night. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, and it became a museum around the time of the United States Bi-Centennial in 1776.
